Thread: Sooooooo Stoked!

  1. Sooooooo Stoked!

I just bought a 90 gal today from hillside tropical, it has an overflow box at 3 levels, sweet Oceanic tank. This is a big upgrade for me from my 33 gal, my yellow tang will be very happy! IT WAS LIKE CHRISTMAS TODAY ONLY BETTER!!!The tank is still sitting in the front of Hillside so check it out, its right by the door.

Thanks everyone still so stoked! I will probably take it home next week. I am taking it really slow, i will most likely build my own stand but may buy one if the looks good. I am also thinking of LED SOlaris Lighting as a possibility. I want to get the best lighting possible and i like the low heat and few bulb changes with the solaris as well as the cloud effect and blue colouring. I am also thinking of ordering a nice custom skimmer from the states, cant say where as they are not a sponsor. Then i will be selling my aqua c remora. I will use my current 33gal as a sump and keep the power compact lighting that on it now so i can grow soft corals, shrooms and cheto etc.

A 3 level overflow is where the water enters at all levels not just the top, so that it is cleaned in a sense at all levels. Check it out at hillside if you are there before monday/wednesday when i will most likely pick it up.

Scrap the solaris - Go MH, T5 and LED attached to a profilux. Likely about the same cost* and allows way more options!

*(okay perhaps a little more expensive, and yes bulb changes are not cool either).

  7. Re: Sooooooo Stoked!

Thanks Todd, i will consider this, i am open to many options for lighting etc of this tank.

That's so great! I don't know what it is about a new tank, but there's something magical about it! :) True sign of an addiction problem I guess.

    Re: Sooooooo Stoked!

Hey Nick.. I saw your new tank today.. its a beauty!. I have a question about the 3 level overflow box. With my normal overflow there is overflow into it just thru the top at the "tooth" level. In the event if a pump failure my tank will only drain down 1/2" then the water level is below the teeth. I see it as kind of a built in fail safe.

Now in your tank with 3 levels of drainage holes, assuming this drains into a sump placed under the tank...in the event of pump failure is it going to drain until its empty below the last layer of slits in the overflow?

  10. Re: Sooooooo Stoked!

Thanks Shelley. Thats a good question, however it would not as if you look inside there is a wall blocking the bottom two, therfore the water has to push over the top in order for the overflow to work. very well designed.

  11. Re: Sooooooo Stoked!

Not to hujack your thread Nick, but if the overflow is the same as the ones by All-glass or Oceanic or Perfecto, it is designed to work with an overflow and return pipe. Without these in place it will drain your tank. The black cover you see around the holes in the bottom, works so that the overflow pulls from three levels, but without the stand pipe in place, there is nothing to stop the water from draining out the bottom.

    Cheers...

  12. Re: Sooooooo Stoked!

oh ok, thanks scott, that makes sense. My bad, from looking and talking with people i thought it would not drain. Is this a really bad thing? If i keep everything in order it should be fine.

    Re: Sooooooo Stoked!

so if Im understanding, there is a standpipe inside the overflow that only allows water above the standpoint to flow out.?

No worries :) The tank will drain though without the standpipe inside the overflow. Some tanks incluse the plumbing, some do not, so you may want to look into that.

    Yes that's correct :)
