I can have the glass done for you. Pm me and I will give you my number.
get glass cut. makes the best lid in my opinion and buying a plastic lid and light will make it tough if you ever want to upgrade the lighting for the tank, maybe for growing plants.
Not to mention that it will be much cheaper.
go glass...
Glass all day long!
Glass:D
I've had glass cut for my tanks at Tri-Line Glass, just take the measurements and they'll cut you some.
Thanks everyone! I've been super busy with the holiday's but now Im going to arrange something with one of the lovely ladies on here (Oceansh).
I guess my next issue is lighting. I have a 4 foot light for aquariums, but I dont think its strong enough. Should I get another light bar? or is there somewhere I can buy a dual lightbar that will look good on the top of my tank?
Edited to add: I dont think its strong enough because my swords arn't flourishing and my other plants have brown spots on them.
what size and wattage are your bulbs? will/can you build a custom top? there are lots of options but remember Watt per gallon some bulbs are more powerfull and half the size of others.. ive found T5 HO to be the best for power in a small size.. but im still new at the lighting game.. find the plants you wana keep and go from there...
Ok, no one make fun of me, but I bought an "aqaurium" florecsent from...... Canadian Tire.... eek!! This was before I knew better.
I am not all that good with building a top, but I am thinking if there is a higher wattage one. The one I have is a GE Plant and Aquarium light. I believe it is a T12?
Nothing wrong with them, they just have a pink tinge to them but the plants like them. You can get tubes but instead of "Aquarium/Plant" ones go with Daylight ones.
Zellers has a two pack for $8. I think Walmart has them too.
So the Daylight ones are stronger than the plant/aquarium? If so, that might solve my issue with not enough lighting.
My next question is, do stores sell attractive looking double light tops? (not just the white ballasts) How much do they run?
im not sure about store bought cases or hood like things u can use but t12 work.. the only thing is the lumen output per watt you can get diffrent types of bulbs running the same watts and one will out perform another if your in a pet store look at the bulb box's and you will see a color temp in K and a lumen or lux (i think american and canadaian verions of same thing? ) but its the amount of light energy it puts off also there is a bulb G.E. makes i think its a design 50 (will double check) that is a bulb built for plant growning same thing as a plant bulb a fish store will sell you without the super fancy/expensive box
Yes the light is a bit brighter and it's more pleasing to the eyes too.
As for your second question I don't think so.
This is what Daryl did as he had a similar situation as you:

I do believe that it ended up being just as expensive to go and buy an actual aquarium fixture though. :(
DIY does not always = cheaper.
I'm looking to get a glass top for my tank. I've never had a glass top before and was wondering what is the best way to go about getting one? I have a 33G tank with a hang on tank filter.
Thanks,
