Thread: Any electricians here?

  1. Any electricians here?

I recently got a dimmable ballast for florescent lights, but I am having a hard time to get it to work as it should. I am wondering if there are any electricians that could give me a hand with the wiring?

I have emailed the supplier (Aqua-digital / GHL) and they are reluctant to give wiring advice through pictures and descriptions (which is fair).

    Thanks.

    Got it figured out!

    ... I hope

Todd, would you mind sharing some details of your setup? I'll be doing exactly the same thing you are and would love some firsthand experience

Actually just in the process of upgrading tanks / sumps / pumps / stands and canopies this week. I'll be moving my profilux with dimmable ballast over to the new tank, and hopefully getting the full effect led sticks soon too.

Is their some part about the wiring in particular that you are interested in seeing a picture of? I'll post some pictures and descriptions of my equipment once I get it all, and have it up and running (about 3-4 days away from tank and equipement - not too sure on the date of big move of rock, coral and livestock).

Oh, and are you still interested in my extra ballast?

  6. Re: Any electricians here?

    pm'd.

I'm interested in seeing as much as possible, anything you're willing to put up, especially regarding the GHL equipment.

I've never seen any of the lighting accessories in person or even any decent picture of the units themselves, what sort of wiring they come with, mounting hardware.. etc. Functionally they sound really, really cool, but I haven't heard any first hand experience with them at all.

  7. Re: Any electricians here?

Well, they are a pain to wire, and the card is just that, only a card no mounting hardware, enclosure or anything. It is far below the standard of the other profilux equipment. Comes with no wiring for card to ballast or ballast to bulbs, no endcaps either.

That being said, the dimmable lighting is the coolest feature that I think the profilux has, really ties the system together and makes it more dynamic to watch / use. I am especally looking forward to seeing how it works with the lighting effect LEDs. And really once you have it set up there is really no need for an enclosure for the card (assuming you can keep it away from water).

Todd, I'm looking at the wiring diagram for the dimming module and I can see why you were so confuzzled. I'm drawing a bit of a blank on one area... what exactly do you do with the X101, X102 and X103 connectors? I'm not sure what "L" "N" and "PE" stand for in regards to wiring...

Are they necessary? Or can you simply wire the ballasts to the wall for power and use the Ballast 1 and 2 + and - control leads for dimming control?

Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

  9. Re: Any electricians here?

I'll have to check tommorow closer, but of the top of my head L = Live (Red / black), N = Neutral (Green) and PE = The other wire (White). If the X101 - X10N connectors are not for the 10V interface, they could also be the outputs to the ballast for dimming control. I believe that you need to connect the live wires from the control to the ballast for 0% switching (ie at 0% it turns the ballast off).

I am afraid that taking pictures will not help too much, as I wasnt very good with my colour choice in my wiring so it will not be too clear, but I can try to get some tommorow evening when I get home.

Ok, thats what I thought.. but was a bit leery to just assume that was the case.

    Thanks a ton!!

    Re: Any electricians here?

ive done a fair amount of wireing in my day the green is always ground... and should be wierd to anything metal that might contact water, a case, anything that can conduct or can short to.. its your life saver black and red are your LIVE and blue too if your using 3 phase.. as in touch it and get shocked white is your neutral or some guys call it your return wire... your 2 pring plugs run a white and either a black or red a 3 prong uses the green so if you drop it in water it grounds out quicker threw this wire then threw you... if you post alink or a pic of what your wireing all parts and the info they gave you i can help you figure it out..
Found a big spoon to stir with...
